New Glasses: Spex Pistols

Nikki McWilliams - Spex Pistols

A wee while back I heard on the grapevine that there was a new glasses shop in town. Not just any old glasses shop- but an “Optical Boutique” going by the name of Spex Pistols!  The address was what used to be the old piercing place on Westport (I used to walk passed it on my way to art school when I lived nearby in first year) so me and Mike paid a visit one weekend to see what it was all about.

I’d been looking for some new frames for a while- and of the hundreds of pairs the mainstream opticians in town- I couldn’t find a single pair I liked.

Anyhoo- Spex Pistols was what can only be described as an Aladdin’s cave of vintage, retro & unusual treats for your peepers.  I must have tried on half of the shop- including some beautiful vintage Liberty cats eye frames as well as new Bulgari’s and Ray Ban’s too!  I ended up choosing the two pairs that I’m wearing in the photos above- they’re really different to my old specs- but change is good- and I love them!

I can’t recommend this place enough- it’s one of Dundee’s hidden gems.  Just head up the hill from the Globe pub on Westport and look out for the mural outside the shop- a giant spray painted lady with cats eye specs and a beehive…you can’t miss it!

What do you think- which are your favourite pair?

    They are magic!
As a fellow specs wearer I understand the importance of finding the right pair, it’s akin to getting a good haircut! Generally I find it’s a fruitless trawl through the high street giants, I will visit next time I am ‘back home’ in Dundee, thanks for the tip 😉
